Named for Denise Scott Brown, a pioneering South African-American architect, urban planner, and writer who profoundly shaped postmodern architecture and urban design. Collaborating closely with her late husband Robert Venturi, she challenged orthodox modernism through landmark civic projects and highly influential writings, most notably their 1972 book Learning From Las Vegas. While she has taught at top universities and received prestigious awards throughout her career, she was controversially excluded from the 1991 Pritzker Architecture Prize given solely to Venturi, sparking an international movement demanding her recognition and highlighting her ongoing advocacy for women in the architectural profession.
